Prairie Ecosystem Project
Introduction and Rationale |
After we have studied the crucial role of pollinators to our ecosystem, we will use this knowledge to explore our local ecosystem and apply that knowledge to improve our area. Your grade for this project will depend on peer evaluations and evaluations from your instructor. You will also be graded on the quality of your final submissions.

1. Grant Writing and Website Team- Kaylee, Ciara, Hannah, Brandon, Drew
Skills: - Able to help write in cooperation with a team - Good at finding typographical errors, spelling mistakes, and bad grammar - Decent grades in English and loves to argue appropriately - Works well with computers - Is familiar with how to download digital media on to computers and upload digital media on to websites - Has an interest in graphic design and/or expository writing that intends to inform Tasks: - Search the internet for potential sources of money to fund our project - Write grants (proposals for funding) to agencies that provide funding - Ask local businesses for support with project through well-composed letters - Manage any money or materials awarded to us - Manage the general direction of our project, define goals, and prioritize efforts - Construct a website that details our project - Construct a website pages that can inform the general public as well as our local school community - Cite sources of info used for this project Grant Link Pearson Grant Help NSF Funding Science Pioneers Grants How to write a grant Sample Grant Proposal (p. 2) 2. Prairie Maintenance Team- Tanner, Courtney, Macey, Teri, Cameron, Dawson, Chris Skills: - Interest in gardening or maintaining wild life preserves - Enjoys hands-on work - Familiarity with gardening tools - "Green thumb" Tasks: - Identify and remove invasive species - Keep path in prairie clear and walk-able - Maintain boarder - In charge of class "monument" - Find tools to borrow Invasive species 1 Invasive species 2 3. Digital Media team- Libby, Tamra, Madison, Cale, Adam, Kyrel Skills: - Interest in photography and/or videography - Has worked with or wants to edit photos/video - Familiarity with digital cameras, digital video cameras, and computers - As an eye for things that are aesthetically pleasing Tasks: - Work closely with the specimen data team and the website team - Photograph plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates found in our prairie - Video plant/pollinator interactions - Document the progress of our project using digital media - Construct promotional media that details our project and its importance 4. Specimen Data Team- Grace, Hayley, Lydia, Cambrin, Nik, Skills: - Enjoys working with living and preserved creatures - Desire to learn methods of curation of specimens - Enjoys working with field guides, dichotomous keys, and informational websites to identify insect and other pollinator specimens Tasks: - Identify plants and pollinators found in our prairie plot - Monitor pollinator and plant species present in our plot - Begin construction of a class collection of invertebrate pollinators to use as data points for the future and as a natural history record - Begin construction of a database that records pollinators and their numbers found in our plot Invasive species 1 Invasive species 2 |
